Why the output is a PNG

ICO can hold transparency itself, but PNG is understood by every tool, browser, document editor and marketplace without exception. Unless file size is the deciding factor, PNG is what to send on.

How to do it

Common questions

Can a ICO file have a transparent background?

Yes. ICO supports a full alpha channel, so transparency survives in the original format as well — but PNG is the safer thing to hand to someone else.

Will the quality drop when I convert?

Not from the conversion. PNG is lossless, so the pixels it keeps are exactly the ones it was given. Any compression artefacts already in the ICO stay as they are — converting cannot undo them, but it does not add more.

Is my ICO file uploaded?

No. The browser decodes it locally and the processing runs on your own machine. There is no server in this, which also means no queue and no file size limit beyond what your device can hold.
